On June 6, 2023 the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) made the unprecedented move to declare a national state of emergency for LGBTQ+ people in America, stating: “LGBTQ+ Americans are living in a state of emergency. The multiplying threats facing millions in our community are not just perceived – they are real, tangible and dangerous,” the group’s president, Kelley Robinson, said. “In many cases, they are resulting in violence against LGBTQ+ people, forcing families to uproot their lives and flee their homes in search of safer states, and triggering a tidal wave of increased homophobia and transphobia that puts the safety of each and every one of us at risk.” Alongside their statement, the HRC released a guidebook outlining health and safety resources as well as a summary of state-by-state laws.

The threats facing our community are real and affect numerous LGBTQ+ individuals in the veterinary community. Through “Alarm to Action” collaborative efforts PrideVMC continues to work to find solutions for members in unfriendly states. We remain committed to helping members relocate if necessary or to find local resources for support if possible. Please contact us if we can offer you support, and please remember to contact your representatives to protest the recent wave of anti-LGBTQ+ legislation.
