PrideVMC Statement On The Berlin Pride Tragedy of 2026

On Sunday July 26, 2026, we learned of the attack on the 2SLGBTQIA+ community in Berlin and the death and injury of members of our community and cancellation of festivities for Pride there. Our hearts go out as a board to queer Berliners and all those affected by this terrorist act. Such events highlight the stark difference between evil and love.

Over a century ago in the late 1800s, Berlin became the epicenter of queer rights and activism.  Much of the progress made up until the 1930’s impacted the development of queer leaders in the 50’s and 60’s. With the fall of the Berlin Wall and the onset of modern freedoms, Berlin has come again to be an epicenter of pride today.  Both Berlin of the past and the Berlin of today have helped to light up a constellation of strong active pride communities.
We hope that those who gathered are comforted by each other and their chosen family. We wish those injured a speedy path to recovery and we mourn the loss of life.  The world has always had joyful queer people who bring such hope, compassion and care to others.  As we all celebrate Pride at different times in parks, towns and cities all over the Earth, we join together as one humanity, 2SLGBTQIA+ and allies alike.  We wish you all healing and strength.

In community,

The Pride Veterinary Medical Community Board of Directors
