To our colleagues in veterinary medicine,
For over 32 years, the Pride Veterinary Medical Community (PrideVMC) has remained steadfast in our mission of creating a better world for the LGBTQ+ veterinary community. Our vision is a profession where LGBTQ+ individuals are empowered and embraced as their authentic selves.
As a Board, we carefully consider when and how to make a public statement or open letter. We ask ourselves questions such as: Will our words help? Could they harm? Is making a statement at this time performative? Is silence more damaging than action? Today, the answer is clear — we must speak.
In light of recent developments, including the Council on Education’s (COE) decision to remove diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) reporting requirements from accreditation standards, we call on the veterinary profession — including the AVMA — to reaffirm and expand its commitment to DEI, and importantly, belonging. We thank the AVMA for their recent communication that reinforces their commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB).
We recognize that institutions are facing unprecedented legal and political pressures. However, the COE’s decision to no longer require DEI reporting requirements—intended to shield veterinary colleges and students from potential legal and funding risks—does not lessen the responsibility to uphold our core values. If anything, it makes that responsibility even greater.
Now more than ever, the AVMA must continue to lead — boldly and visibly — to:
- Support diverse pathways into the profession.
- Advocate for all students’ success, especially those from historically marginalized communities.
- Champion inclusive policies and practices across the field.
As educational institutions face growing constraints, the AVMA will continue to play a critical role in ensuring that our profession remains welcoming, equitable, and future-ready.
We draw strength from historian Timothy Snyder’s words: “Do not obey in advance.” To avoid teaching power what it can do, we must hold fast to truth, act with courage, and stay grounded—even in the face of adversity.
We acknowledge and celebrate that joy is a form of resistance, and joy is resilience. And we are IN!
In solidarity,
The PrideVMC Board of Directors
