Greetings PrideVMC Members,
The theme of this month’s member message is visibility. Two things happened recently that both inspired me and reminded me how important our queer and trans visibility work is. One was listening to President Biden’s address to congress last Wednesday. To hear a sitting US president say to all transgender Americans, especially youth, that he has our back was amazing, uplifting, and empowering. I felt seen and held in a way that I had not experienced before. I am so used to our government sweeping us under the rug and pretending that we do not exist. With the current attempts on the state level to oppress and harass trans youth by interfering with access to health care, it was so uplifting to hear that we have the support of the federal government.
Then I watched the Netflix documentary “Disclosure” and was blown away. This is a very moving and powerful discussion about trans visibility in the media and entertainment industry. I realized that it is the visibility and advocacy of the trans folks interviewed for this show as well as out trans folks throughout our history that bring our stories to light. Having these stories told and celebrated is why our president has our back. This is precisely why we need to do the work that we do at PrideVMC, to be out and visible and to advocate for trans and queer folks in the vet profession. It is our responsibility to let folks from all intersections know that there is a place for them in vet med.
So, the next time that I meet someone at a vet conference, either in person or virtually, that says to me “Well, I don’t know any transgender people in the vet profession!” I can say, “You do now!” It is this visibility and advocacy that is so important, and we can see the direct effects of it, all the way to the US president. Please read on to learn about the exciting things coming up in May, all great ways to build on this visibility theme. Let’s keep up the good work and keep doing what we do to make this a better profession and a better world for the LGBTQ+ vet community.
