PrideVMC is proud to spotlight Diamond Partner Boehringer Ingelheim.

Boehringer Ingelheim has been a long-time advocate and supporter for the LGBTQ+ community, which includes our patients, our employees and their loved ones. We proudly stand up tall with our LGBTQ+ colleagues to fight for equality and condemn all acts of discrimination. Here is a letter our senior leadership shared with BI employees on our views.

Boehringer Ingelheim has been a long-time advocate and supporter for the LGBTQ+ community, which includes our patients, our employees and their loved ones. As many of you witnessed, we experienced an important moment in history when the U.S. Supreme Court upheld our nation’s foundational principles of fairness and equal opportunity ruling that existing federal law forbids job discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and transgender status – a landmark victory for the LGBTQ+ community and its supporters.

While this is, without a doubt, a step in the right direction, it does not mean that full equality has been achieved. It weighs heavily on our hearts that decisions like this are still being debated. As this fight for equality continues, BI maintains its 20+ year commitment of not tolerating discrimination in our workplace – in any form. We promote a culture of belonging and expect our colleagues to show up to work as their authentic selves each and every day.

BI is dedicated to the diversity of our colleagues and helping others gain a better understanding of why we must keep pace with the ongoing challenges of LGBTQ+ rights. We cannot lose momentum – we must be Upstanders to ensure no one is denied a job or released from a current position simply because of who they are or whom they love.

Below, are just some of BI’s continued actions to support the LGBTQ+ community, our employees, patients and their families:

  • Unwavering and continued support of The Equality Act. This federal legislation will guarantee protections outside of the employer’s four walls, including housing, healthcare, public education, access to credit, access to public services and spaces, and juries.

  • Participating in the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) as one of the 206 businesses that signed the amicus briefs representing wide-ranging sectors of the national and local economy and are committed to building workplaces that value diversity, inclusion and equality.
    • In fact, BI has achieved a perfect score on the HRC’s Corporate Equality Index for the Best Places to Work for LGBTQ+ employees for the past 12 years.

  • Enabling inclusion of transgender individuals in our clinical trials. BI’s U.S. clinical trial teams support the participation and inclusion of transgender individuals as scientifically appropriate.

  • We celebrated our “Working with Pride” PRIDE event on June 24 with messages of belonging, including education on the use of pronouns and specific terminology.

  • Supporting our Working With Pride (WWP BRG) business resource group which has chapters across the country in both human pharma and animal health.

  • Maintaining our U.S. Workplace Gender Transition Guidelines to serve as a resource for all our employees, including how to support a colleague or loved one going through gender transition.

  • Extending the onboarding content for our new hire orientation to ensure our culture of belonging and LGBTQ+ values are clear and understood from day one and upheld consistently.

BI continues to be an Upstander #ForEachOther and proudly stands up tall with our LGBTQ+ colleagues to fight for equality and condemn all acts of discrimination. Our priority is to ensure a safe and welcoming environment of belonging for our BI family. This will never change.
